もし、やってしまってそれですべて決着がつくのなら、
今すぐやったほういいだろう、
もし、暗殺で一切のけりがつくなら、
それで王座につけるのなら、
この世のこの一撃で、一切合財の始末がつくわけだ、
しかしこの世で、この瞬間に賭けて事を起こせば、
あの世の恩寵は望めないだろう、
この訴訟にはすでにこの世で判決がでているのだ、
血の決着を教えた者は、そのことにより、
めぐりめぐって、自分が血まみれになる、この公平な正義の神は、
毒殺を謀（はか）った者に、毒盃を飲むようにしむける。
今ここでダンカンは二重の信頼に包まれている。
まず第一に、おれはダンカンの縁者であり臣民だ、
暗殺に強く反対する役回りだ、そして迎賓の主（あるじ）だ、
客の命を狙う者を締め出すのがおれの役目、
おれ自身が短剣を持ってはならぬ。
さらにこのダンカンは、生まれついての柔和な性格、
政（まつりごと）は公明正大だから、人徳を慕って、
あたかも天使が声高らかに触れ回ったかのように、
暗殺の大罪をこぞって非難するだろう、
さらに赤子のように純真な同情心は、
疾風（はやて）に乗って、あるいは見えない空気の宅急便にのったケルビム天使よろしく、
恐るべき行為を人々の眼前に吹聴することになろう、
涙の雨は風をもおぼれさせるだろう。
おれには、この決意のわき腹をけあげる拍車がない、
ただ飛び越える野心があるだけだ、
それが逸（はや）って、飛び越えて落馬する。
